What Are Hymenal Tags?

Chances are you’re not here by accident, you’re reading this because you wanted to know: what are hymenal tags? Are they normal? Should they be removed? Does everyone have them? What’s their deal??? You’ve got questions, and we’ve got answers.

First off, you should know that hymenal tags are completely normal and generally harmless. But in order to better understand what hymenal tags are, you need to know more about the hymen and its purpose (feel free to skip ahead if you already know what it is!). The hymen is a membrane that covers the vaginal opening. It’s located within the vagina, and can be any number of shapes and sizes. While most women are born with a hymen, some are born without them.

Over time, the hymen undergoes physical changes due to intercourse, tampon use, childbirth, recreational activity and so on. All of this can cause the hymen to stretch and tear. It’s also normal for the hymen to thin out as we age. These changes can cause tissue outgrowths known as hymenal tags or hymenal remnants. It’s possible that you’ll never see or feel them, but some women may notice that they change the appearance of their vagina. It’s also possible for hymenal tags to create discomfort during intercourse or when using tampons.

If you know or suspect that hymenal tags are interfering with your quality of life, there are options available to help. At Austin Labiaplasty & Vaginal Rejuvenation we offer hymenectomy, or hymenal remnant removal, which is exactly what it sounds like: a procedure to remove the excess hymenal tissue. Having a hymenectomy will mitigate any discomfort caused by hymenal tags and improve the appearance of the vagina as well.

A hymenectomy is usually performed in the comfort of our offices. The procedure takes about an hour in total, but it only takes ten or fifteen minutes to remove the hymenal tags. Because we use oral sedation, you’ll need to make sure you have a ride lined up afterwards to take you home. You’ll also receive dissolvable sutures to aid with healing. Patients should also avoid sexual intercourse for at least six weeks after the procedure.

If you’re interested in learning more about hymenal remnants removal or any of our other procedures, contact Austin Labiaplasty and Vaginal Rejuvenation today to schedule your free consultation!
