Hymenectomy: What To Expect From Hymenal Remnants Removal

We’ve said it before but it bears repeating: vaginas come in all different shapes and sizes. That being said, It’s still perfectly natural to look at your vagina and wonder: is it normal? 

You might be wondering if that excess skin in the opening of your vagina is normal, and we’re here to tell you: it is. In most cases, this is what’s referred to as hymenal remnant  or hymenal tags. Childbirth, intercourse and tampon use can cause the hymen – a membrane that covers the vaginal opening – to stretch and change over time, leaving behind tissue remnants. 

Remnants are quite common and do not pose a medical risk, yet they might be more noticeable for some women than others. Leftover hymenal tissue can become easily irritated or inflamed by normal activities like sex or using a tampon, causing discomfort. Oftentimes, women might feel self-conscious about the appearance of their hymenal remnants too. 

At Austin Labiaplasty and Vaginal Rejuvenation, we offer a procedure called “hymenectomy”, or hymenal remnants removal. Hymenectomy is a super simple procedure that is typically performed in our offices. The procedure involves excising excess hymenal tissue, which helps reduce vaginal discomfort and improve the appearance of the vagina.  

All in all, hymenectomy takes under an hour to perform – sometimes as little as 15 minutes. We use local anesthesia, too, so you’ll need to make sure you have someone to drive you home or wherever you’re recovering afterwards. Dissolvable sutures are applied to help with healing, and we also offer medicine to alleviate any post-op pain in the following weeks. Patients are also asked to avoid sexual intercourse for at least six weeks after their procedure, so as not to interfere with healing.
