Clitoral Hood and Glans Reduction

Clitoral glans reduction and clitoral hood reduction are procedures that address clitoromegaly, a condition where the clitoris becomes enlarged. Clitoromegaly occurs when a woman has excess testosterone as a result of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or a medical condition. For instance, women with PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) might develop clitoromegaly because they have high androgen levels. Women exposed to excess androgens while in their mother’s womb might also be born with clitoromegaly.

Clitoromegaly is also a rare side effect associated with testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), a form of hormone replacement therapy that’s becoming increasingly popular with women. More and more women are turning to testosterone replacement therapy to help them through menopause because of the overwhelmingly positive benefits; however, there’s a small chance of developing clitoromegaly. If a patient does get clitoromegaly from testosterone replacement therapy, then adjusting her dosage may help the clitoris return to its “normal” size.

There are also surgical options, like clitoral glans reduction, that can help patients with clitoromegaly. Even though clitoromegaly isn’t necessarily dangerous, it can be uncomfortable for patients especially because the clitoral glans is the most visible portion of the clitoris. The clitoral glans is partially composed of erectile tissue, similar to the penis. In fact, it’s normal for the clitoris to become enlarged when sexually aroused. However, because the clitoral glans is similar to penile tissue it can appear phallic and even “droopy” if permanently enlarged.

Clitoral glans reduction is a fairly straightforward procedure that involves reducing any excess, non-erectile tissue. The clitoral glans or clitoral bulb looks smaller as a result. A clitoropexy is also performed to elevate the erectile clitoral body, minimizing any drooping or sagging. Patients might also opt to have a labiaplasty during their procedure, which addresses enlarged labia. Sometimes referred to as an “outie” vagina, this is when the labia minora are larger than the labia majora. You can head to our blog to learn more about the difference between an “innie” and an “outie” vagina, and how labiaplasty can leave you with more “natural-looking” labia.

Since the clitoral glans is partly composed of erectile tissue, you might be wondering whether or not reduction surgery reduces sensitivity during sexual intercourse. While clitoral glans surgery helps with sexual responsiveness, it’s important to keep in mind that several different factors, both biological and psychological, can impact sexual response. As with any surgery, there might be temporary side effects following clitoral glans surgery that impact your sex life, but this generally resolves with time. The risk of any long-standing negative effects is slim.
