Can Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy Help With Sexual Dysfunction?

Sexual dysfunction is a very common complaint among women of all ages, however it often goes undiscussed in mainstream conversations about wellness. It can be influenced by many different factors, including excess vaginal tissue, hormone imbalance, genetics, emotional health, and menopause. The symptoms of sexual dysfunction are often described as a low sex drive, difficulty with arousal or reaching climax, vaginal dryness, or discomfort during intercourse.

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a substance that is easily obtained by concentrating a patient’s blood. The platelets contained in PRP consist of powerful cytokines and growth factors, activating tissue regeneration, stimulating collagen, and increasing blood flow to the area where they are injected. In the past, PRP has primarily been used to treat sports injuries and various other conditions affecting different areas of the body. However, it is quickly becoming a popular treatment for sexual dysfunction.

Sometimes called “the O-shot” (or “orgasm shot”), injecting PRP into the clitoral and vaginal tissue may increase the overall pleasure of a patient’s sexual experience by boosting arousal, causing more intense orgasms, increasing vaginal lubrication, and increasing clitoral and vaginal sensitivity.

PRP is a great therapy that can be used alone or in conjunction with other services. In order to achieve optimal sexual wellness, we often recommend it to women undergoing labiaplasty, vaginoplasty, ThermiVa, and/or hormone replacement therapy.  It is also a safe option for women who do not wish to, or are unable to, take hormones.
