WHAT (AND WHERE) IS THE MONS PUBIS?

The mons pubis is the fatty tissue overlying the pubic bones, primarily situated below the lower abdomen and above the pubic hairline, occasionally referred to as a “FUPA“.

WHY WOULD SOMEONE NEED MONS PUBIS REDUCTION/MONSPLASTY?

The mons can become more prominent and cause a bulging appearance in some women. This may happen from significant weight gain or loss, or following abdominoplasty or c-section surgery. In the case of abdominoplasty or c-section, fatty tissue is often concentrated below the incision line leading to a bulge at the level of the mons pubis. Mons pubis reduction/monsplasty involves using a small suprapubic incision to reduce the excess skin and fatty tissue. This procedure is done outpatient, in the OR, under anesthesia.  It is indicated for patients who find the mons pubis bothersome aesthetically or if it is causing discomfort.
