What Does “Barbie Vagina” Mean?

If you’re new to the expression “barbie vagina,” your first thought is probably: Wait, does Barbie even have a vagina? No, she doesn’t, but that’s kind of the point! “Barbie vagina” surgery, sometimes called “bagina” surgery or “designer vagina” surgery, is often used to describe labiaplasty, a procedure which reduces the size of an enlarged labia. So while the point of “barbie vagina” surgery isn’t to get rid of your vagina àla the famous doll, labiaplasty will give you a natural, evenly thin labia.

Women travel from all over the world to see Dr. Shashoua!

More and more women are seeking out labiaplasty, but not just for cosmetic reasons. Patients seeking out labiaplasty often have either an enlarged labia majora, enlarged labia minora, or both. While excessive labial tissue can certainly lead to a dreaded camel toe, it can also detract from your quality of life. Patients with an enlarged labia might struggle to find bathing suit bottoms that sufficiently cover their labia. They might also find that tight pants irritate an enlarged labia. It can have implications on your sex life, too – patients with an enlarged clitoral hood often find that it interferes with clitoral stimulation during sex.

If you’re someone who nodded “yes” while reading the entire last paragraph, then you might want to schedule a consultation to see if you’re a good candidate for labiaplasty. At your consultation, we’ll walk through your symptoms and come up with a game plan based on your goals and unique labia. From here, we’ll schedule your labiaplasty which is performed safely in our office in order to keep costs down. Before the procedure we’ll administer medications to help with pain control and relaxation, while also providing you with a patient-controlled, inhaled analgesic. A topical anesthetic is also applied in order to numb the labia so you’re comfortable during the procedure.

The labiaplasty procedure is fairly straightforward: a trimming technique is used to diminish the linear portion of the thickened darker skin which extends from the opening of the vagina to the clitoral hood. In the most delicate part of the surgery known as clitoral hood reduction, we use the “wedge technique” to reduce the skin where the clitoral hood meets the labia. This part of the procedure allows a natural transition from the clitoral hood to the labia. In some cases where the clitoris is bulging, the clitoris is lifted and the bulge is reduced with a clitoropexy

Following the procedure we suggest patients take a week off work to heal. As you heal from surgery, you can expect a labia minora that is smooth instead of puffy and that doesn’t protrude outside the lips.
