Why Is My Clit So Big?

Back to All

Every now and then, we take inventory of our bodies and we go “hey, that seems weird!” or “hey, why does that look like that?” It can be easy to feel like our bodies are not “normal” or “natural” when we compare them to what we consider to be “the standard.” One of the more common questions we get from patients is “Why Is My Clit So Big?” For many women, the size of their clitoris and labia is a cause of concern, but not to worry! An enlarged clitoris and/or excess labia tissue is almost always completely normal.

Reasons Why the Clitoris Can Become Enlarged

If you notice that your clitoral tissue is a little larger than normal or have noticed changes in the size, there are several completely normal factors at play. Sexual activity results in enlarged clitoral tissue, and this tissue can remain enlarged after sexual activity; especially if you are engaging in consistent and routine sexual activity. Other causes are typically hormonal changes in the body, either caused by conditions affecting the endocrine system (PCOS) or by the amount of testosterone present.

Clitoris On Testosterone

Many women take testosterone supplements for a variety of reasons. A woman’s natural testosterone production typically decreases with age and can be exacerbated by things like stress, poor diet, and menopause. This can cause low energy, low sex drive, fatigue, muscle weakness, and a variety of other symptoms. When women begin taking testosterone, it is common to see the clitoris become enlarged to some degree because this is the erectile tissue in females (similar to the penis in males.) The medical term for this is clitoromegaly.
