Why Does My Clitoris Look Like A Penis?

Back to All

Ever wondered if your clitoris was “too big”? Or, why your clitoris looks kinda…phallic? You’re in the right place: One condition that we treat at ALVR is an enlarged clitoris, also called clitoromegaly. This refers to an enlarged clitoral hood and clitoral glans, the parts of the clitoris that are on the outside of the body. When this happens, the clitoris sags and looks more like a penis. There are a few reasons why a woman might experience clitoromegaly, and several treatment options to reduce enlarged tissue.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s quickly recap the anatomy of the outer clitoris. The glans clitoris, or the clitoral bulb, is the most visible portion of the clitoris, right above the vaginal opening. It is what people typically think of when they think of the “clit.” While it is sensitive to touch, the glans clitoris doesn’t contain significant erectile tissue like the rest of the clitoral body. The glans clitoris is separate from the clitoral hood, which is where the inner vaginal labia meet the vulva.

Let’s discuss why a patient might experience an enlarged glans clitoris. Some women are genetically predisposed to having an enlarged clitoris, and it can even be there at birth. This can happen as a result of being exposed to excess androgens (a male hormone) in utero.  Certain hormone imbalances can cause an enlarged clitoris.

Clitoromegaly is also on the rise due to more and more women using testosterone replacement therapy to help with hormonal imbalance. It’s worth noting that clitoromegaly is more likely to occur among patients taking higher dosage of testosterone, and that the benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can outweigh the potential risks for some patients.

At Austin Labiaplasty and Vaginal Rejuvenation, we have procedures to address clitoromegaly – no matter the cause. We’re proud to offer clitoral glans reduction and clitoropexy to help patients achieve a more naturally-appearing clitoris. Clitoral glans reduction is exactly what it sounds like: it is the surgical reduction of the glans clitoris. Clitoropexy is when the clitoris is elevated in order to reduce the drooping appearance of the clitoral body.

Clitoral glans reduction and clitoropexy are often combined to improve the appearance of the clitoris, but they can also improve sexual pleasure by making the clitoris more exposed to stimulation. Still, many patients want to know if clitoral glans reduction permanently damages sensitivity: while there is often an initial decrease in sensitivity, normal sensitivity typically returns after healing. That being said, all surgeries come with risk so it is always best to discuss any concerns that you have with your surgeon beforehand.

If you’re experiencing an enlarged glans clitoris, rest assured that you’re not alone. At ALVR, we’re committed to helping you achieve comfort and confidence.
