Back to All

It’s not uncommon to have a little discomfort in our private parts, but, many women often wonder why! The clitoris is home to 10,000 nerve endings, which makes it very sensitive during sexual activity and arousal. Sometimes, due to a variety of factors, the clitoris can become irritated and these nerve endings can be “turned on” so to speak, and not in a good way. If you find yourself googling “why does my clit hurt?” hopefully we can provide you with some answers.

Infections and Swollen Clitoris

Inflammation and swelling caused by yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, and STIs can be difficult to see at first, but can cause pain in the clitorus that can be difficult to diagnose if you can’t see the point of inflammation. Luckily, in most cases these ailments can be easily treated.

Nerve Conditions

Compression of spinal nerves, muscle injury, or strains near the groin can cause pain in the vagina that may cause concern, but typically these issues are minor and will resolve with rest and recovery.

Skin Conditions and Vaginal Biome Disruption

Rashes, dermatitis, psoriasis, and other chronic skin conditions can pop up in and around the pelvic area. These can also cause pain that is localized to the clitorus. It may seem intuitive to use vaginal cleansing soaps to remedy these conditions, however in some instances these soaps can disrupt the vagina’s natural microbiome and exacerbate inflammation and irritation.

Hormonal Imbalances

Certain conditions can cause our hormones can get out of whack and cause the clitorus to become enlarged, which can cause discomfort and pain. Too much testosterone, whether taken via hormone replacement therapy or due to a disease process can cause the clitoris to become swollen. In these instances, many women opt for surgery to reduce the size.
