Vaginoplasty: The Less Famous ‘Plasty’ That You Shouldn’t Overlook

Back to All

While vaginoplasty doesn’t have quite as glamorous of a reputation as labiaplasty (sometimes referred to as a “Barbie vagina”, “designer vagina”, or even a “nymphoplasty”), it is arguably one of the most beneficial procedures when it comes to improving a patient’s quality of life. Where many of the procedures we offer at ALVR are focused on addressing a specific area of the vagina or pelvic region – labiaplasty (labia minora), labia majora reduction, monsplasty (mons pubis), clitoropexy and clitoral hood reduction, etc. – vaginoplasty is more geared toward improving the overall function of the vagina taken in its entirety.

The tissues and muscles that make up the vagina and surrounding area can stretch and become loose after childbirth and/or with age. This often leads to some degree of pelvic organ prolapse. As the perineum (the area between the vulva and the anus) and vaginal tissue weaken and shorten, organs surrounding the vagina begin to shift and can start to protrude into the vagina itself. This can include the bladder (cystocele), uterus, small intestine (enterocele) or rectum (rectocele).

A vaginoplasty tightens the structural layers of the vagina and perineum with the goal of restoring vaginal support. This can not only help rectify or prevent potential issues with pelvic organ prolapse, but it can also have the added benefit of increasing sexual sensation by returning the vaginal opening to a smaller, more youthful size. Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure, but we also offer a non-surgical treatment called ThermiVa that can offer similar benefits.
