Perks of Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) for Sexual Health

Here’s a sobering statistic: Men orgasm 90% of the time during intercourse, but women orgasm only 40% of the time. Known as the “pleasure gap,” there are several reasons for this discrepancy between men and women. Sexual satisfication is determined by psychological and physical factors, and some factors we can manage while other variables like hormones or genetics are out of our control. Fortunately, there are plenty of options that can give your sexual wellness a boost.

One treatment option that we’re proud to offer at Austin Labiaplasty and Vaginal Rejuvenation is Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT). While ESWT might be new to ALVR, it’s been used by doctors to address a variety of ailments for years now. ESWT is a form of acoustic soundwave therapy that  focuses high-amplitude sound waves on a small area in order to “shock” the tissue. This “shock” causes tiny, microscopic tears to the tissue and while it sounds scary, it’s actually painless. Tiny tissue tears or micro-trauma is what allows the tissue to restructure and regenerate vascularity and nerve function, similar to when you’re starting to lift weights at the gym and building new muscle.

ESWT is the same technology often used by urologists to treat kidney stones and orthopedists to treat inflammation. It’s also used to address erectile dysfunction (ED) in men with great success. Because penile and clitoral tissue are closely related, ESWT has now been adapted to treat sexual dysfunction in women as well.

One of the biggest benefits to ESWT is that it’s fast and painless. Soundwaves are isolated and applied to clitoral tissue, helping stimulate tissue regeneration. In fact, upwards of 1,000 shocks are applied to each side of the clitoris. Clitoral tissue is more sensitive and responsive as a result, which leads to more satisfaction in the sack. Every patient responds differently to treatment, though it’s common to receive 1-2 treatments per week for about 4 weeks.

ESWT is also more localized than other soundwave treatments like Cliovana, prompting a stronger response within the clitoral tissue. A greater response means increased blood flood and nerve sensitivity, which means better orgasms. Another added perk is that ESWT can be used in conjunction with other sexual wellness treatments, i.e. if you’re visiting ALVR for ESWT, you can also get SottoPelle and/or the O-Shot at the same time.
