Getting Everything “In Shape”: Athletes and Labiaplasty Surgery

Labiaplasty surgery is done to reduce enlarged or long labia minora or majora. This is often hereditary and may be noticeable from around the time of puberty, or size can increase with age. Sometimes changes happen due to pregnancies or deliveries.

In younger women, they may become especially aware of excessive or hanging labia after becoming active in sports such as soccer, yoga, weight lifting, running, biking, or cheerleading. Not only can the longer labia be uncomfortable in tight clothing or swimsuits, it can pull or pinch with exercise making these activities more challenging or, at the very least, less enjoyable.

Yes, we see teenage patients who visit with a parent or guardian for a labiaplasty surgery. It can be a difficult subject to approach with a parent, we however see very supportive parents come in with their daughters for consults. Parents are often unaware that the labia have become longer with puberty or are causing discomfort. Labiaplasty surgery is done to shorten the labia so there isn’t excess skin hanging down that can cause pulling with clothing and exercise.

Our athletes and active patients find significant relief and improved confidence once this issue has been resolved. Excess labia can get in the way of perusing your passions with ease, this can be resolved with a short, in-office procedure.
