At What Age Should Women Take Testosterone?

Back to All

For years, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has been a common treatment for men suffering from low testosterone. More recently, TRT has become an increasingly common treatment for hormone imbalance in women. Many women believe that hormone treatments are reserved only for those who have gone through menopause, however, this isn’t necessarily the case.

Hormonal imbalances can occur in women of all ages due to a number of factors. While it’s normal for hormone levels to diminish naturally as a result of menopause and aging, the next top causes of low testosterone are issues with the ovaries, pituitary gland, or adrenal gland. Other causes can include chronic illnesses like kidney disease and diabetes, obesity, opioid use, and genetic conditions.

With that being said, being diagnosed with one of these conditions isn’t a prerequisite for having low testosterone. Low testosterone in women often goes undiagnosed because the general symptoms can be indicative of other conditions. If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, it may be a good idea to seek medical attention and have your hormone levels checked:

  • Low or no libido
  • Fatigue/lack of motivation
  • Hair loss
  • Weight gain
  • Decrease in muscular strength and tone
  • Fertility and menstrual issues
  • Depression and anxiety

Even if testosterone is not the issue, you may discover that you’ve had an underlying condition that has been going untreated. Ultimately, it will be up to a doctor to determine if testosterone replacement therapy is a good option for you. If low testosterone does turn out to be a factor, you will be happy to know that treatment options have improved drastically over the past few years.

At ALVR, we offer a form of bioidentical testosterone replacement therapy that is highly effective: SottoPelle. With SottoPelle, a steady stream of hormones are released into the bloodstream via small pellets that are inserted into a patient’s skin. This means fewer of the side effects typically seen with synthetic hormones and other forms of hormone delivery, which often deliver hormones sporadically and in large quantities.
