Back to All

There’s a new treatment in town that promises to boost your sex life and so far its got rave reviews: Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) has been used to treat all sorts of medical ailments for years. More recently, it is being used to improve women’s sexual health by increasing female sensitivity during intercourse.

Wait a second… shockwave?! Sounds painful!

Don’t worry, it’s not at all as bad as it sounds. If you’ve ever had a lithotripsy for kidney stones, then you might be familiar with ESWT. The same technology is also used regularly to treat inflammation in orthopedics and is proven to help men experiencing erectile dysfunction.

Sexual dysfunction among women is a common, but not widely discussed topic. Sometimes referred to as Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD), sexual dysfunction encompasses psychological and physical factors that negatively impact a women’s sexual satisfication. Anything from hormones to genetics can derail your sex life, but fortuantely there are several options that can help solve for this.

Ok, but back to this shockwave therapy… Tell me about the “shock” part.

ESWT is a form of acoustic soundwave therapy that does “shock” the tissue, but not with electricity! Plus, it is practically painless. By shocking your body’s tissue and creating “micro trauma,” you encourage the tissue to regenerate and restructure. This process restores vascularity and nerve function. Initially, ESWT was found to address sexual dysfunction in men with erectile dysfunction. Because penile tissue is closely related to clitoral tissue, ESWT was found to also help women dealing with sexual dysfunctiton. When applied to the clitoris, ESWT makes clitoral tissue more sensitive. This results in more sexual responsiveness and better, more frequent orgasms.

The actual procedure is simple, straightforward and fast: Upwards of 1,000 shocks are applied to each side of the clitoral tissue. Trust us when we say it goes by quickly! The number of treatments varies by patient, but most patients typically undergo 1-2 treatments each week for four weeks total.

An added benefit to ESWT is that it’s easy to combine it with other treatments that can enhance female sensitivity and libido. For instance, ESWT might be used in tandem with SottoPelle – a form of testosterone replacement therapy in which pellets are inserted into the skin and dissolve over time. Another option is called the O-Shot, which is when platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is injected into clitoral tissue. PRP, much like ESWT, stimulates collagen production and blood flow into the area where it’s injected. The end result is increased female sensitivity during intercourse, and better orgasms.
