When do Patients with Enlarged Labia Seek Treatment?
Posted by ALVR | April 21, 2014
Back to AllEnlarged labia can be symptomatic as early as the pubertal years and as late as the menopausal years. Common complaints include discomfort with tight clothing, bathing suits, intercourse or during exercise. Patients usually seek treatment once symptoms become so bothersome they are interfering with activities or if the appearance of the extra labial skin causes embarrassment.
A common barrier to treatment is a lack of knowledge of treatment options. Many women come in after years of marriage and years of being bothered by the size of her labia. This may be due to learning later in life about the treatment options, a fear of undergoing surgery or difficulty discussing this sensitive issue. For these women, they are often very relieved following their consult when they realize how quick and relatively easy the surgery is. Once the procedure is complete, many women notice the difference right away, even while sutures are present and report a great sense of relief to no longer have long or hanging labia.
At Austin Labiaplasty and Vaginal Rejuvenation, we are well aware of the unique needs of all patients undergoing labiaplasty. This is especially the case when dealing with younger patients where special attention is given to post op pain management, time off from school and the possible emotional effects of the procedure. For patients under the age of 18, we require a parent or legal guardian accompany her to her visits and to co-sign consent forms for the procedure.
The type of labiaplasty recommended depends on the patient’s desired outcome as well as her exam findings. For cosmetic labiaplasties, these are typically performed in the office and take about 1-2 hours. In-office labiaplasties are not covered by insurance. Cost of labiaplasty surgery depends on the type of labiaplasty performed. View our labiaplasty pricing.
