Healing After Labiaplasty – What to Expect

So, you’re scouring the internet for innie vagina, barbie vagina, and labiaplasty before and after, trying to figure out if labiaplasty is right for you. There are many concerns we hear in our consultations, chief among them is how long does a labiaplasty take to heal?

Here we explain how long it takes for labiaplasty to heal, what it’ll look like, and what to expect after labiaplasty surgery.

Hi, my name is Kristin Longshore. I’m one of the nurse practitioners that works here with Austin Urogynecology, and I’m here today to talk to you about labiaplasty healing and what’s normal, and kind of what most patients are concerned about post operatively throughout the healing process. I would say probably the most common concern or complaint that patients have within the first two to three weeks post-op is swelling, assymetry and possible irregularity along the incision line. I do reassure patients that during this time frame, during that initial two to three week period the labia take on an appearance that is going to be nothing like the final outcome, because of the healing process that is going on during that initial time frame, you will see a lot of swelling, bruising. The sutures will still be present. So the area can look a little concerning from a patients stand point. However, from a providers stand point when we see these patient’s in clinic everything is typically healing very well.

I do usually reassure patients if from a asymmetry stand point that that early in the process due to the swelling that is still present in the tissue, usually assymetry is a little hard to discern. We usually wait somewhere till about six to eight weeks after post-op, just to kind of re-assess, ’cause at that time most of the swelling has resolved from the tissue and we can get a better idea of if there is any true assymetry still present, and then start to discuss revision if necessary. Some of the other concerns that happen are the ridging that can sometimes occur along the labia incision line, and this occurs sometimes just from the sutures, especially if there’s excessive swelling within the tissue post-operatively. The sutures can kind of cause some indentation along the labia. The labia themselves even before you have a labiaplasty will have some natural kind of texture to them.

So we usually will tell patients, kind of, even after you get past the six to 12 weeks post-op, even if there is some mild ridging it creates more of a natural look from a aesthetics stand point within the labia, unless there’s a obvious or really concerning dived or kind of separation of tissue that’s present from the incision, from the sutures, excuse me, then that’s when we will be a little more concerned about a possible revision in that area and that type of thing.
