What Is a Mons Pubis and Where the Heck Is It?

This is a classic example of “there’s a word for that?” The mons pubis is the fatty tissue overlying the pubic bones, primarily situated below the lower abdomen and above the pubic hairline. The mons can become more prominent and cause a bulging appearance in some women.

This may occur due to significant weight gain or loss, or following abdominoplasty or c-section surgery. In the case of abdominoplasty or c-section, fatty tissue is often concentrated below the incision line leading to a bulge at the level of the mons pubis. This area can also be reduced, if bothersome aesthetically or causing discomfort.

Mons Pubis Reduction Procedure

The procedure is done in the operating room under anesthesia. The excess skin and underlying fatty tissue is removed through a suprapubic incision and the skin is lifted and reapproximated with absorbable sutures, leaving the mons flatter and more even with the surrounding anatomy.

Mons reduction can be performed alone or in combination with labia majora reduction.

The mons pubis is often referred to as a “FUPA” and you can read more about the common FUPA in leggings concern we get from patients.
