Can Taking Testosterone Affect Getting A Labiaplasty?

Many women today are turning to testosterone to help increase their sex drive, as well as to improve fatigue and their overall sense of wellbeing. There are multiple forms of hormone management including creams and pellet therapy. After starting testosterone therapy many women notice an increase in libido and sexual satisfaction. These same women are also looking to help improve vaginal sensation and aesthetics with procedures such as labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation. So what are the options for patients on testosterone who want vaginal surgery, and are they still candidates for surgery?

Testosterone therapy overall has no effect on the procedures used to improve the vaginal anatomy — like vaginal rejuvenation, labiaplasty, and clitoral hood reduction. With that said, there are some considerations for patient who is on this type of hormone therapy. With some women, the erectile tissue of the clitoris can enlarge with testosterone supplementation, leading to a protruding or larger clitoris. This occurs because it is similar to the erectile tissue in men. This does not pose a health issue, however some women may find it bothersome, uncomfortable, or unsightly. Labiaplasty with clitoropexy can help lift and reduce the protrusion of the tissue without operating on or affecting the actual clitoral tissue itself. This can help the overall appearance in patients experiencing clitoromegaly, or an enlarged clitoris. We also recommend being evaluated by your hormone therapy physician to ensure proper hormone dosing.

Labiaplasty with clitoropexy is a procedure done under local and oral anesthetic in our outpatient surgical suite. These procedures typically take about 2.5 hours and require minimal overall downtime. We recommend patients take one week off of work and limit sexual activity for 6 weeks after undergoing the procedures.
