What’s the Deal with Vaginal Tightening Creams? How Do They Work?

Back to All

From genetics to childbirth, there are several factors that can cause the vagina and perineum to loosen over time. Fortunately there are also several different types of treatment options to help restore your vaginal anatomy. The exact treatment plan will vary between patients, but it’s important to be aware of all the different options out there so you can make an informed choice with your doctor.

Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s talk about the symptoms to watch out for if you’re experiencing vaginal looseness or prolapse. Many patients notice a difference in the way their vagina looks and feels, like a gaping vaginal opening or tissue peeking out. Women have also said that they’ll feel the sensation of air moving from the vagina.

It’s not just a matter of how your vagina looks and feels; patients who are symptomatic also notice decreased sensation or vaginal looseness during sex. This doesn’t just directly impact your sex life, it can also have repercussions for your confidence, too.

It’s tempting to try and find a quick-and-easy solution, but the fact is that there isn’t a simple, one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to vaginal rejuvenation. While surgery might be best for some patients, others could benefit from a more conservative approach. In other words: what works for one person, won’t necessarily work for another.

Chances are, if you looked into vaginal rejuvenation online you’ve come across lotions, gels and creams that promise to tighten your vagina. This certainly is an option worth trying, especially if you’re looking to try a “light” treatment option. While some vaginal tightening lotions might promise results overnight, it’s important to keep in mind that results with gels are often temporary and short-lived. To maximize effectiveness we typically suggest using them in conjunction with kegels, or pelvic-floor exercises, to promote vaginal tightness and support your abdominal organs.

For the most part, vaginal tightening gels are made with natural ingredients that have an “astringent” factor to them. “Astringent” ingredients have a tightening quality to them, similar to tannins in wine, which makes them effective at addressing mild vaginal laxity.

Another more conservative option for vaginal rejuvenation is ThermiVa, a non-invasive and non-surgical treatment that uses radio-frequency technology to restore vaginal tissue. Women with mild incontinence have also found relief with ThermiVa. This is an ideal option for patients with minimal symptoms or patients that haven’t experienced pelvic organ prolapse. As with most forms of conservative management, it typically needs to be repeated a few times or consistently for maintenance.

The most permanent treatment option is surgical vaginal rejuvenation, which can help patients regardless of the severity of their symptoms. Sure, surgery is certainly more intimidating, but the results are lasting.

Vaginoplasty normally takes about two hours under general anesthesia and requires a nights stay in the hospital. The goal is to narrow the vagina and improve the ability to contract naturally. In short, your surgeon will make a wedge incision in the vaginal wall then pull the skin together, securing it with dissolvable sutures. It takes around 6-8 weeks to heal.
