Does Clitoral Hood Reduction Increase Sensation with Intercourse?

Excess labial tissue and excess skin around the clitoris (the clitoral prepuce or clitoral hood) can cover the clitoris, making it more difficult to achieve clitoral stimulation with intercourse. The excess labial tissue can extend laterally along the sides of the clitoris or the clitoral hood can be enlarged centrally (above the midline of the clitoris). When this excess skin is present, a labiaplasty with clitoral hood reduction can be done to remove this excess skin. Removing this excess skin around the labia often results in increased stimulation with intercourse to enhance stimulation. There are other conditions that can also cause decreased stimulation with intercourse. A physical exam and detailed history will allow for a diagnosis and optimal treatment plan. Labiaplasty with clitoral hood reduction is typically done in the office. Prior to the procedure, patients are given oral medications for relaxation and are advised to apply topical a topical numbing cream. At the time of the procedure, additional numbing medication is administered to completely numb the area. Although this procedure is not done under anesthesia, patients are often so relaxed they sleep during the surgery. The surgery takes about 1-2 hours. The excess skin is removed with heating and cutting instruments, often using a combination of the trimming and wedge technique. The new skin edges are closed using a dissolvable suture. The sutures take about 6 weeks to dissolve and the tissue will continue to flatten out during this time. Restrictions after surgery include vaginal rest for 6 weeks, to allow the area to heal completely. Patients usually go back to work after a few days or up to one week and are able to resume normal activity shortly after surgery.
