Can I have a Labiaplasty at the Same Time as Prolapse Repair?

The answer is yes! We frequently perform robotic prolapse repairs or vaginal prolapse repairs in conjunction with a labiaplasty procedure. This does not typically change recovery time for the patient. With both procedures, the labiaplasty and the prolapse repair, the patient is advised vaginal rest for 6 weeks following surgery. So, if the procedures are performed at the same time, this allows for one rest and recovery period. If labiaplasty is performed alone, this is typically done in the office under oral relaxants and numbing medications. The procedure takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on how extensive the labiaplasty. When labiaplasty is done in conjunction with a prolapse repair, the procedure typically takes around 3 to 4 hours and is performed in the operating room at a hospital. Vaginal rejuvenation is nearly always part of the repair when a prolapse repair is also done. With vaginal rejuvenation, the distal portion of the muscle on either side of the vagina is plicated (brought together) resulting in a tightening affect. This is often part of the rectocele repair, addressing the symptom of vaginal looseness with intercourse. Women often present with complaint of vaginal looseness or progressively decreasing sensation with intercourse without the sensation of a distinct vaginal bulge. Upon exam, it is very common to find a rectocele. If there is stress incontinence (leakage of urine with coughing, sneezing or exercise), a mid-urethral sling can also be done at the time of surgery. It is very common to have all of these procedures performed at the same time, resulting in restoration of the vaginal anatomy, vaginal tightening, resolution of stress incontinence and elimination of excess labial tissue. The best treatment of choice is based on a detailed history at the time of consult, a physical exam and the desired outcome of each individual patient.
